We have a 501-c-3 nonprofit organization which helps a poor rural community in Africa. Although the donations are tax-deductible, we have been unable to obtain grants or even small donations to fund some critical projects like rebuilding a crumbling school, re-stocking our community pharmacy for the village, etc….
Personally, I devoted a lot of time and even made use of skilled volunteers, but to no avail.
It looks to me that many people are no longer care and especially when you are talking about projects in Africa.
At one occasion, we passed a money jar to a company to collect donations that will be used to buy pens and pencils for some poor elementary students in that rural community of Africa. When we went to pick the money jar, I discovered the employees had unplugged the bottom and remove quarters and all dollars bills.
My question to you is this: What can we do to get the much needed donations? Which doors to knock? Are the local grassroot volunteers a helpful?

Try a bake sale. You can set up shop in front of Wal-Mart.

This sounds like a very worthwhile project. Actually, very worthy of a newspaper story. I think you should contact your local newspaper and ask for a “lifestyles” story to be written on your group and your project. Have information, as well as pictures and some sort of outline ready. State several times to the reporter about the fact that your group is open for donations and guarantee that the funds will go towards your goal. You will be surprised how many people will open their wallets. Being in the newspaper, somehow, will make your charity more worthwhile.
newspapers are always looking for “feel good” stories, and I would think that yours would fit the bill.

THIS QUESTION MAKES ME WONDER WHERE YOU LIVE? IN MY COMMUNITY A MOTHER TOLD ME ABOUT HER DAUGHTER’S EFFORTS TO HELP FUND SIMPLE PROJECTS TO HELP AN AFRICAN VILLAGE BUILD A WELL AND SOME CHEAP HOUSING. (THE DAUGHTER HAD BEEN IN THE PEACE CORPS.) MY CO-WORKERS AND I ALL DUG INTO OUR POCKETS AND PULLED OUT SOME CASH. WE FELT GREAT ABOUT DOING IT. SO DON’T GIVE UP AND KEEP GETTING THE WORD OUT TO OTHERS.
