We have a small community organization and have a piece of artwork donated to sell at one of our picnics. What raises more money – a raffle or a silent auction? The artwork is worth about $200 and only 50 persons come to the picnic. Does someone have experience to know which is better – auction or raffle?

Because there are only 50 people, an auction would make more money. If each ticket was a dollar, which is the average price for a raffle ticket, you would only make 50 if eveyrone bought one.
An auction can go as high as people are willing to pay.
Good luck! ;]

To bad you did not do this idea before Christmas you could of had a Cake auction, everyone submits a decorated cake and then it gets auctioned off you should see some creativity in that, the silent auction does well……..why not have a pancake breakfast……right after Masses alot of people are into this

Try the auction. You can start the bidding at 10.00 and surely you will get a minimum of 500.00. Up the ante by having a strong bio of the artist on flyers and if the artist can be present that always helps. I am interested how you came to the amount of 200.00 for the artwork. What may be worth 200.00 to one person could be worth 2000.00 to another. Good luck!!

I was recently at an event where we did both. The silent auction was able to generate more funds for us. In many other events that I’ve attended, the silent auctions usually generated a considerable amount more than raffles. However, we did have a lot of popular items that were donated (ie travel/vacations, sports memorabilia, fine dining, museum passes, theater tickets, etc.)
It all depends upon how you structure your event and the audience. If the artwork is something that your audience will want, then I think the silent auction will likely bring in more money.
